How to Become Judge in Nepal. | Qualifications required for being a Judge

Judge is a person appointed in the court of law to decide cases. Judges hear and decide cases on the basis of evidence and proofs. A Judge has to act according to code of conduct of judges. No judge can act his/her accordingly.

There are some qualifications required for being a judge. Those person who has completed his/her bachelor degree in law can become a judge but he/she has to meet some other qualifications as well.

In Nepal, there are three tiers of court and the qualifications for being a judge of these courts are different according to their hierarchy. Under Part 11 of the Constitution of Nepal, the qualifications for being a judge of different tiers of court are mentioned as below:-

Qualifications for Judge of District Court

  • Must be citizen of Nepal
  • Have completed bachelor degree in law
  • Practiced law or engaged in legal profession for at least eight years
  • Not disqualified by any law
  • Not a member of any political party

Qualifications for Judge of High Court

  • Must be citizen of Nepal
  • Have completed bachelor degree in law
  • Worked as judges in district court for at least five years
  • Practiced law or engaged in legal profession for at least ten years
  • Not disqualified by any law
  • Not a member of any political party

Qualifications for Judge of Supreme Court

  • Must be citizen of Nepal
  • Have completed bachelor degree in law
  • Worked as the Chief judge or judge of High Court for at least five years
  • Practiced law or engaged in legal profession for at least fifteen years
  • Not disqualified by any law
  • Not a member of any political party

Qualifications for Chief Justice of Supreme Court

  • Must be citizen of Nepal
  • Have completed bachelor degree in law
  • Worked as judge of Supreme Court for at least three years
  • Not disqualified by any law

If a person fulfills these qualifications then he/she can apply for these post for being a judge.
