Who is called a Lawyer ?
Lawyer is called the person who is still engaged in law (LLB/BALLB) studies. This person does not have permission to fight the case in the court because without full study one cannot get registered for practicing law.
Who is called an Advocate ?
Advocate is usually called a lawyer. It is a person who has completed law studies and is practicing as an advocate in a court. That is, an advocate is a person whose student life is over. An advocate is called a barrister in Scottish and South Africa. You will remember that Mahatma Gandhi had returned from South Africa as a barrister.

Let us now know the difference between these advocate and lawyer :-
1. A lawyer is a person who has studied law and trained in law. The term lawyer is a very famous and basic word whereas advocate is a special type of lawyer who can stand for his client in a court of law.
2. The term advocate is not used in the United States, where they are simply called Lawyers. However, the term advocate is mainly used in the United Kingdom (UK) and other commonwealth of Nations .
3. The functions of advocate and the Lawyer include representing your client in court, representing your client and providing legal advice, filing a public interest litigation in a matter, and their role may vary depending on the "type" of the lawyer.
4. Basically, An Advocate can be a Lawyer but a Lawyer cannot be an Advocate. The advocate post is one step ahead of the lawyer. The scope of work of an advocate is larger than a lawyer.
From the above mentioned difference, it can be concluded that these two words i.e. advocate and lawyer are similar to each other. It should also be kept in mind that different words have been used for lawyers have different meaning in different country, some country calls those who study law as advocate, some calls barrister, some calls attorney, some calls lawyer and some calls solicitor etc.
Finally, I hope you have understood that what is the difference between advocate and lawyer. Lawyer and advocate is almost same but not at all. A lawyer is a person who is studying law and not got registered their name in Bar Council of the State and cannot fight cases of others.
But an advocate is a person who has completed his law study and has got registered his name in Bar Council of the State and can represent his client in the court and he has authority to do so.
